Buying your makeup and skincare products online? Think again…

Last week’s Life of Kylie episode focused on exposing the beauty industry’s black market when she set out to address consumer concerns associated with knock-off Kyle Cosmetics’ Lip Kits.

Working in the cosmetic industry, we know that counterfeit makeup and skincare products is nothing new which is why we regularly warn our clients to stay away from ordering these products online. These counterfeits can contain anything from mercury and lead to even rat poop and they can cause horrible skin rashes, allergic reactions and even infections.

While we are all for saving some money here and there, the place to cut costs isn’t skincare. We have seen and heard horror stories from clients thinking they were getting some amazing deals on SkinMedica and Obagi products off of Ebay and Amazon. What they really got was nasty eye infections, chemical burns and loss of sensation in certain parts of the face.

So how do you know if you have purchased a knock-off?

Certain product lines like SkinMedica and Obagi are physician dispensed products, meaning they can ONLY be sold at a location where there is an MD on staff. These products are not sold online by third party vendors.

Products sold through unauthorized websites are diverted and therefore may be diluted, expired or counterfeit and may not be safe to use. You can learn more about these unauthorized dealers here. Additionally, if you purchased your products at a mall kiosk or flee market, chances are the products you have bought are fake.

If you have purchased products online or from a questionable retailer, make sure to take some time to inspect the product and the packaging. Opening up the product and noticing a foul odor or color should be a red flag. Additionally, brand logos and wording can oftentimes be misspelled or designed differently. Lastly, trust your gut. If you think the product you have recently purchased may not be the real thing, toss it! It’s better to be safe than sorry!

If you have questions or concerns about your skincare products, please feel free to contact us. We have certified estheticians on staff that would be happy to address your issues and help you find the right products for your skin.
