I have been a professional makeup artist for over 10 years now but it was my love for art that really inspired me to seek out new opportunities within my industry. Luckily, I get to work with board certified surgeons at The Plastic Surgery Group, who are constantly embracing new technologies and techniques for enhancing patients’ appearances, so naturally it was a piece of cake to convince them to send me to Look Image Academy in Rhode Island. It was there that I received specialized training to learn the correct methods of applying advanced permanent eyebrow makeup such as the Feather Hair Stroke Technique which is a revolutionary 3D effect for natural looking permanent makeup eyebrows.
It was the creativity and artistic ability needed that made me fall in love with permanent makeup. After I was certified and graduated from the academy I made my way back to Albany excited to share this new service with my clients at Spa One.
What I was not ready for was the slew of new clients that were coming in not to have their first permanent makeup session but to have their botched permanent makeup fixed. I saw everything from uneven eyeliner to multicolored stenciled eyebrows that were shades of navy blue to grey.
Starting from scratch, you can really create something that is beautiful and symmetric to a client’s face shape but fixing someone else’s mistake is definitely more of a challenge. In fact, in some cases we actually have to remove or lighten the tattoo using our enlighten laser by Cutera which removes tattoos in as little as 3 treatments. Once that treatment has had time to properly heal and the results are satisfactory, we can then go in and retattoo the area with new customized ink colors that coordinate with the client’s skin tone and hair color.
Permanent makeup can be genius and it can completely transform a person’s appearance and self esteem with beautiful, natural looking results. However, if you do not vet out a qualified, experienced professional to perform the tattooing, your results can end up being quite scary. My best piece of advice is to do your homework before you let anyone tattoo you! Read reviews, look at before and after photos and research the artist’s credentials. It may save you a lot of time, money and your self esteem in the long run!
