Answers to Your Questions
How does laser skin resurfacing work?
Laser skin resurfacing works by vaporizing the outer layers of skin, and removing the unwanted imperfections they contain. As part of the healing process, the skin is replaced by new healthy cells and collagen production increases. Over time, skin texture improves and the skin's surface looks smoother and tighter, resulting in younger looking skin.
Will it work for me?
Women and men of all skin types can benefit from laser resurfacing, but individuals who have fair, non-oily skin see the best results. The treatment works for fine lines and wrinkles, age spots, scars, and sun damage.
What can I expect during treatment?
Our board-certified plastic surgeons perform laser resurfacing in the main medical office, adjacent to Spa One. Laser resurfacing can be a minimal or more extensive procedure depending on your individual goals. To control any pain or discomfort you will be given local and topical anesthetic, and your eyes are shielded with protective eyewear. Your doctor will pass the laser back and forth over your skin to vaporize the outer layers.
What's the recovery like?
After treatment, your skin will be dressed with protective ointment and possibly bandages. These will need to be maintained for about 10 days to keep your skin clean and moist. It's likely that you will experience swelling and moderate to significant discomfort, but ice packs and pain medication will help. During this time, your skin will likely ooze, crust, and peel.
As your skin heals, it will become bright pink or deep red in color; this is a natural part of the healing process and a good sign. Normal color will return to your skin week by week, but some pinkness may remain for 3 to 4 months. It's extremely important during this time to avoid any sun exposure, and if you must be in the sun, you will need to apply a strong sunscreen and wear protective clothing.
How can I maintain my results?
You can maintain your results for a longer period of time by wearing sunscreen and following a recommended skin care regimen. Some people choose to repeat the procedure after several years to renew their results.
