Who Gets Permanent Makeup?
The reasons for wanting permanent makeup vary. Some patients have a busy schedule that doesn't allow for time to reapply makeup; others simply want to avoid the hassle of applying makeup every morning. Other reasons people consider permanent makeup:
- Sparse hair on the eyebrows

Cosmetic tattooing is also favored by some breast reconstruction patients who want to improve the appearance of the areola and nipple. The procedure can also camouflage certain types of scarring.

Answers to Your Questions
How is the procedure performed?
Before the procedure starts, the provider applies a topical anesthetic to numb the treatment area. We'll also test your skin to make sure you aren't allergic to the pigment we use. In some cases, the area being tattooed is marked.
The micropigmentation procedure for cosmetic tattooing involves a handheld device that creates hundreds of tiny punctures in the skin, pushing pigment just below the surface of the skin, in the layer called the dermis. Once completed, the procedure ends with ointment to help keep the area soft and promote healing.
Is more than one treatment session needed?
This varies depending on the patient and the areas being treated. In many cases, at least one follow-up treatment is necessary to get the optimal results. This treatment is scheduled after the initial procedure is completely healed.
How long does the procedure take?
Plan on spending at least 2 hours with us for eyebrows. Should you decide to pursue permanent makeup as part of breast reconstruction, the time may vary, and we will be able to provide a more accurate estimate during your initial consultation.
Is permanent makeup actually permanent?
When considering its effect on your appearance, it's a good idea to be aware that the changes are long lasting, but you should also expect some fading to occur over the years. Touch-up appointments can easily darken cosmetic tattoos if they've faded with time. Touch-ups are sometimes needed anywhere from 3 months to 1 year after treatment; keeping a diligent skincare regimen and mitigating your exposure to direct sunlight are the most important things you can do to ensure the longevity of your procedure.
